Global Textile Reuse Initiative

The Challenge:
It is estimated that near 100 billion pieces of clothing are produced each year generating eye watering levels of textile waste. The US alone, has seen over 12 million tonnes of textile waste per year for decades.

The UK, like most developed western populations, despite an established recycling infrastructure, sees more than 300,000 tonnes of clothing going to landfill. In fact, 5% of the UK’s total annual carbon and water footprint comes from clothing consumption.

And according to the UN Environment Programme it takes an estimated 3781 litres of water to make a pair of jeans, so not surprising, the fashion industry uses c93 billion cubic meters of water per annum, enough to meet the needs of five million people. This means the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of annual global carbon emissions and 20% of global waste water!

There is a growing need therefore, to prevent clothing and textiles going to waste, and to extend the life of textile garments through re-use.

Packaged Group invests in a successful clothing and textile re-use operation. It helps to reduce environmental burden whilst supporting local communities in the UK and overseas through the efficient collection, distribution and trading of re-usable textiles.

The Solution:
Packaged Textiles currently serve Local Authorities and Municipal Waste Contractors in the South West, North East and the North West of the UK through local collection teams and strategically located depots. With expansion plans to reach the entire UK, handling c20,000 tonnes of reusable clothing and textiles, we aim to trade and re-use over 100 million items per year.

Generating new revenues for local authorities, our operation reduces waste, supports overseas communities with the help of our world-wide distribution partners, and ensures an economic and environmental, sustainable “win-win” solution.
